We ended the day with the scholars at the hotel. We had them write entries on their thoughts about the campaign slogan " Don't Re-Nig, Don't vote for Obama" and a T-Shirt that stated "OMG Obama must go."
Parents and viewers, what do you think? What was the person thinking to write don't Re-Nig? You know... about 6 years ago, I would have never thought an African-American would be President of the United States. In fact, I really did not think President Obama would make it. Let us look at Re-Nig or Re-elect that Nigger, which is what the person really meant. Even though the person denies the racial intent of the statement, I know deep inside his mind he is thinking "I made my point."
I appreciate these statements, because it reminds us that hate still exists and to be prepared for it. Our scholars can not ever say they never saw it coming. The responses from the scholars were very insightful.
We usually wrap up our tours with sessions such as this. Here you see our director, Mr. Jones, facilitating the session. After the prompts, the students had to get up and think of something nice to say about another scholar. Well viewers, I am tired, I am about to go to bed. Good night
