We are now at Meharry Medical College. This is a graduate school, so there will be no need to apply, but the students were exposed to the medical school experience. Meharry Medical school started around 1826 with a man, a white man, traveling to Kentucky in the late hours. He found himself stranded on this road with nowhere to go. A slave family took him in and helped him the next day. He promised that he would repay this family. Fifty years later he helped to start the medical school, which stands to this day. This school is well known for helping patients who would normally not be able to receive medical services. You will see evidence of this in one of our pictures.
I was taught by my father to do for others, not for gain, but because it needs to be done. I am reminded of this by the slave family who took Mr. Samuel Meharry in. No one ever knew the name of the family, however this hospital would not have existed had it not been for their kind deed.
